La Petite Fille de la Mer
A Mermaid, John William Waterhouse, 1901
Azure, azure wave and sky,
Prancing pearls of spray;
Diamond laugh and emerald eye
Beckoned me to stay.
Flowing, flowing flaxen locks,
Skin unholy white–
Flashing scales among the rocks,
Giggling water sprite.
"Tarry, tarry," sang the maid,
"Bide by me a while–
Just to watch the sunlight fade,"
Smiling in her guile.
Never, never, nevermore
May I leave the sea;
'Tween the ocean and the shore
She enchanted me.
